Question:

How do you know if your childs tooth will turn black??

I have a 2yo and about 2 weeks ago he had a really bad fall....it was his second birthday and we bought him a tricycle....he fell over the handle bars and his face broke his fall....anyway i took him to a GP soon after as there was alot of blood and swelling and he had the shakes.....he had chipped a tooth and removed alot of gum.....i took him to the dentist the next day just to make sure his mouth was ok.....about a week later we were back at the doctors as the sores in his mouth had become infected and he had infected tonsils by this stage....now he is feeloing alot better but i am concerned his front 2 teeth are turning black??? he wont open his mouth for me to look but i am sure they are changing colour (maybe it is my guilty imagination for buying him a tricycle????lol) anyway i wanted to know long it takes for them to turn black and if there is anything i can do that might prevent it????i would hate for that adorable smile to have 2 big black teeth front and centre....thanx :)

Answers:

If the teeth have started to turn color they most likely will not go back. The root has been damaged. Due to necrosis(tooth death)the tissues in the tooth have changed color. Because your child is so young the dentist will probably leave them unless they hurt then they will need to be extracted. On an adult they would due a root canal, but your child is young. Your child should gain his permanent teeth between the ages of 5-7. Even though this seems dramatic you do not want to risk a bad experience at the dentist yet. If the teeth bother him he will let you know. The color can be unsightly and you may not like the teeth in pictures. It's not your fault things like this happen...boys will be boys.
Just remember they are baby teeth.
Also bring your child to the dentist regularly so he can follow-up on the trauma area and inspect for infection and development of the permanent teeth.
