Answers:

the tmj appliance that you will probably get it a hard plastic material that has been molded to fit onto the upper teeth, although, in some cases the bottom, but that is not a big deal. it is usually slim, not like a sports mouthguard that is often bulky plastic the covers both the upper and lower teeth.
the idea behind it is to support the teeth in a bit down position so that the teeth so not touch. in the correct resting position, the teeth sould not touch. when the teeth are touching then there is muscular and joint tension in the jaw area.
my guess is that you will be advised to wear it at night and stay aware of clenching(holding teeth together) during the day.
the clicking/popping noise that you are hearing is the joint sliding out of place...not too far from what happens when you pop your knuckles.
thing is, is that you do not want to do it just to make that noise...you can cause extra irritaion to the joint and over time it wil start to hurt. kinda like arthritis.
oh, tmj stands for temporal-mandibular joint...everyone has one...but you have tmjd tmj d=disorder.
the appliance is not hard to wear and may aleviate tension and you miught realize it makes you feel better in a way you didnt know it was bothering you...good luck!
