Is it bad if the gum on my lower tooth has sort of detatched from it?!

Question: Somehow, either I was eating an apple or something, my gum has slightly detached from my lower tooth. Now it looks like a pocket next to my tooth and I'm afraid of bacteria storing in it. Will it heal on it's own since I just tore it and it's not receeding? Or should I go to the doctor?

You should probably see a dentist if your cleanings and checkups are not up to date b/c it could be caused by gum disease/ bone loss/ calculus/tartar buildup beneath the gums. However, if this is just an accidental trauma and you have healthy gums and up to date cleanings and checks, you will probably be fine if you keep it clean, swish with mouthwash, etc. Healthy gums heal quickly. Just be sure to brush gently.

It should start to heal on its own in a few days - keep an eye on it and if it doesn't look any better or starts to look inflamed and red, get thee to a dentist ASAP.

There may be deep pockets with calculus which requires scaling.
There may be food impaction and swelling. if untreated may lead into infection and abscess.

Rinse your mouth with saline water. See your dentist.

Go to your dentist. They can tell if it's trauma causing the gap, or if the sulcus all ready HAS bacteria/infection around there. By the way, it's normal to have some gap between the teeth and gums (it's called the "sulcus").
