Can a nightguard cause choking?!

Question:

Can a nightguard cause choking?

I've been suffering from headaches and facial pain for so long. Finally, my doctor and dentist realized that I clench and grind my teeth, and that's what causing the pain. The dentist prescribed a nightguard, but I have to wait til next month for a custom made guard. I purchased one at the local drugstore, molded it to my teeth, yet I am scared that if I wear it at night it will fall backwards and block my throat. I know it sounds silly, but can I choke/suffocate from the nightguard? Please let me know.

Answers:

You shouldn't be worried about choking or suffocating, it is too big to become lodged. Most of my patient that have a guard will tell me that they sometimes wake up with it out and it is in the bed or on the nightstand. Good luck and I hope you get some sleep!
