Its usually bees wax. Its for making your braces more comfortable if you have one area that is poking you in the cheek. Sometimes one area rubs your cheek raw or sometimes a wire breaks and pokes you in the cheek. Place a small piece of wax over the are until you can go into your dentist to have it fixed.
The dentist/orthodontist usually gives the wax to you when you go in for your regular visits. Just ask for it. If you go to the drug store, they typically have some that does not cost much.

Well usually the orthodontist gives you like 2 or 3 things of wax. And when you run out just go to a drug store and it is like $4.00-$5.00. It's to keep the brackets/wires etc. from rubbing up against your mouth and making sores!
