Gingivitis issues. Want to know general prognosis and self care.?!

Question:

Gingivitis issues. Want to know general prognosis and self care.?

I have had very good teeth and gums throughout my life. Never had a cavity. But I have been living in China for this past year and just recently was sick for about two weeks with flu and bronchitis. I have also been diagnosed with sarcoidosis. I only give this information for health history.
This past week I noticed a stain on my teeth (not suprised since I drink a lot of teas and formerly smoked). I went to brush my teeth to see if I could remove the stain (I used a bit of baking soda for this which I have used before). I realize I brushed a little too hard and (bad me) was going back and forth not circular since my gums started bleeding and hurt.
Upon closer inspection I noticed that my gums have begun demonstrating gingivitis and have pulled back. I have read up on this on line but everyone says that the gums will only hurt when touched. But for the first time in my life they actually kinda sting. As I said before: I have never really had any tooth or gum problems before. Ideas?

If any of the denstist out there read this then do you agree with antibiotic care for this? Is it even needed? What is usually prescribed?

Answers:

I would see a dentist to get a cleaning. Gum disease such as gingivitas doesn't show up overnight. The plaque hardens at the gumline and irritates the gums which causes swelling, redness, bleeding and gum recession. It's usually reverseable. But brushign too hard can also cause your gums to receed, not necessarily means gum disease. I would switch to a softer toothbrush. And gentle on the gums so they don't receed any further. For now, I would use a warm salt rinse, continue to brush with a soft toothbrush and floss. Then a cleaning and checkup to make sure your bones are in good shape and that the disease hasn't progressed or to get brushing tips. I did that and realized that I was beating up my gums for years and caused them to receed. Good luck!
