If sugar harms teeth, why are toothpastes sweet?!

Question:

If sugar harms teeth, why are toothpastes sweet?

My tooth starts aching when I use a certain brand of tooth paste (The Gel Variety). I notice that the particular paste tastes sweeter than others.
The toothache subsides when I switch the toothpaste brand.

Is this possible? Has someone else experienced this?

Answers:

The toothpastes are not sweetened with sugar, at least not the ADA-approved ones.
