Question:

What causes mouth ulcers and what's the best way to cure and prevent repeat attacks?

Answers:

mouth ulcers can be caused by many things:

Approx 15 to 20% per cent of UK population suffers from them in their lifetime.

1. allergy to ingredients in toothpaste- many toothpastes contain an ingredient called sodium lauryl sulphate. This is the ingredient that makes the toothpaste foam up in the mouth ( is in washing up liquid and other detergents) Often, when an alternative is found, the mouth ulcers resolve.
try Sensodyne gel, (not the toothpaste) , Retardex,
2. Deficiencies in iron,folic acid, vitamin B
3. Gluten allergy
4. Giving up smoking
5. Stress
6. Trauma- biting area or rubbing from denture or similar appliance
7. Menstrual cycle in women
8. Food allergies
9. Immune deficiencies
10. Certain drugs

recommend try changing toothpaste. Also avoid foods containing benzoate preservatives (E210 to 219), chips, crisps and chocolate(sorry!)

I used to suffer with mouth ulcers along the sides of my tongue, particularly when ill or stressed. I changed toothpastes (use sensodyne gel) and I don't get them anymore.
