Tooth infection?!

Question:

Tooth infection?

hi there,

wne to dentist tuesday morning for a extraction which was stopped mid flow as discovered a massive infection under the tooth, (*** i mentioned in other question) anyway...

have been taking the antibiotics (metroidozole 400mg) 3 times a day so far and yet i swear the infection is getting worse, all the gums have swollen up around the tooth and the tooth seems to be leaking more and more pus than ever!

should the antibiotics have started to work by now, i took 3 on tuesday, 3 on wed and 2 so far today, or should i ring the dentist as maybe pills not strong enough?

thanks for your help

Answers:

Metronidazole is a very strong antibiotic.

Gum swelling is very normal 3 days after a tooth extraction. If there is a bit of pus, that can be normal too. Rinsing with water and salt can add to the antibiotic effect.

But if there is a constant pus leaking, it may be good to contact your dentist.

If there is a lot of pain, it might be a dry socket.

So I would only contact the dentist if there is a big and constant flow of pus. Otherwise I would wait for the healing process to take over. You will see change in a few days.
