Getting a cavity filled?!

Question: i apparently have a "shadow" on one of my teeth, and on my next dental appointment, the dentist wants to see if its a cavity or not. if its not, he's just gonna put some protective coating on it (does that hurt?)
but if it is, then he'll obviously have to fill it. i've been lucky and never had a cavity before, so if he it turns out to be one, it'll be my first cavity. so i heard that you get a shot of novacaine, to ease the pain, but i'm not sure if thats with all cavities. i think im actually more scared of getting a novacaine shot in my mouth than the actual filling (cause you won't feel that part)
so basically the point of this question, is could you please explain step by step the procedure for a filling, and how much it really hurts? (cause of course the dentist will be like "it doesn't hurt at all" )
also, if u know about getting a protective coating on a tooth i would like to know about that too, cause i might not even have a cavity.
thank you so much!

i had a coating!
im a big baby at the dentist.
DONT be scared of the shot.
you cant feel it poking you, only for 4 seconds. its not bad at all.
ok for fillings they give you a shot, drill for a long time, and fill it up somehow.
i do feel the drilling.
its like your eating something cold, you know that feeling?
it could be scary but if you relax then you'll get through it.
a lot of people go through fillings, and your dentist
is a professional, don't worry.

When I had my first and only filling, it was less painful but more agitating..HE first put the shot right above the tooth, which numbed my whole mouth...then continued on to drill my tooth where the filling was going to be. It was like my tooth was heating up,,,it was so agitating, i wanted to slap the tool out of his hand...after the drilling was complete,,he started putting the filling in...he was dabbing it like he was mad crazy. I could feel my head bobbing back....after he was finished he said i couldnt eat for 1 hour...my mouth was numb for the next 2...but it didnt really hurt though, jus was annoying,,,hopefully yu dnt have to get one...
