Question: I have a cracked tooth which is infected and hurt BADLY!!! I ended up in the ER, and they gave me penicillin and pain pills yesterday. Now after being on the antibiotic....my neck and throat hurts worse....on that one side. should i be worried???

or will the antibiotic start kicking in soon??

should i go back to the ER?

Your dental office should see you SOON as ER's are not equipped with handling dental emergencies. The only thing they can do is prescribe antibiotics and pain medicine. It could be that your infection is so severe that the antibiotic is not working, or you may need a stronger antibiotic than Penicillin. It sounds as though the tooth needs to be opened so it can drain the infection and a root canal be performed. If you choose to have the tooth extracted, depending on your medical history, the infection needs to be brought under control because when a tooth that is extremely infected is extracted, the infection can spread throughout the body and can cause harm. Bottom line is you need to be seen by a DENTAL professional SOON.

My first question is have you ever been diagnosed as being allergic to "Penicillin"...and if so did you inform the ER of that fact. If it's not an issue it does take about 36 hours for an antibiotic to kick in and begin to show it's helping. If the pain doesn't get better in 24 hours you need to check back in with the ER.
