Unnecessary Jaw Surgery?!
Question:
Unnecessary Jaw Surgery?
I'm 19 and recently went to see an orthodontist about braces (i dont have insurance and its all out of my pocket). She said that I would need jaw surgery to correct my severe overbite (I heard that costs alot). I've been thinking about it a lot lately. It would change the shape of my face (a minus in my mind, i think my face looks fine the way it is). I dont have any pain in my jaw so it all seems purely superficial? Am I right? Would it negatively impact me if I didnt get this surgery and just got braces to straighten my teeth but not correct the overbite? Is there anything really wrong with overbites?? Just wondering.
Answers:
You asked a dental professional how to correct your teeth. He suggested jaw surgery. No you don't have to have jaw surgery
no one has to do anything in this world. Get a second opinion or ask the orthodontist if they can correct your teeth as much as possible without surgery. But your words alone said you have a "severe overbite"
You should see my daughter's smile. She was pretty before jaw surgery but she is gorgeous now! She had a underbite and the surgeon after having braces to straighten her teeth did jaw surgery. Within 6 weeks her swelling was nearly completely gone and within 6 months got her braces off. Her smile looks like a models smile!
Jaw surgery was paid for by our medical insurance not dental insurance.
