Whats wrong with my tooth?!

Question: About a year or two ago i had my tooth worked on, i had a cavity and the doctor did what he said was a root canal and put some clove tasting stuff in the big hole in my tooth. He instructed me to come back in a month or when the stuff he put on broke. Well i never went back and the stuff broke off about 4 months after the procedure. Now i have a HUGE hole in my tooth, and my gums get sore occasionally (around the area) and when im done eating i have a horrible rotten taste coming out of the tooth, whats goin on?

The stuff that he put inside was most likey Zinc oxide, dentsist use it to sooth a tooth that is very sore.
There are 3 steps to a root canal and if you didnt go back after the first one you will most likely have to get the tooth pulled at this point.
Your tooth is full of infection, the dentist did not clear out all of the infected material (because you didnt go back) It is very dangerous to have an open abcess like that, you are leaving your entire bloodstream open to infection, people have had heart attacks from having abcessd teeth for to long.
You need to see a dentist and have that tooth pulled ASAP

Umm....the rotten taste is your tooth rotting in your mouth.
You need to stick some pliers in there and yank that bit out.
Or go see a dentist if you can't stomach it.....

you have an infection and need to see a dentist right away. infections in your teeth and gums can lead to blood infections and things that will kill you. don't pull the tooth yourself. they may want to treat the infection first. GO TO THE DENTIST TODAY!!!!!

Sounds like the sedative filling the dentist put in fell out and now your tooth is becoming infected. You need to call the dentist and get in for him to take a look and possibly give you antibiotics. Don't wait, you don't want it to suddenly become unbearable on a weekend.

The tooth lost its blood supply or nerve that rest in the canals or openings in each of the roots of the tooth when the root canal was started. The root canal procedure left you with open canals that were not filled, since you didn't return to your dentist for the completion or second part of the procedure. After the medicated pellet and temp cement fell out, this left the canals wide open and exposed to all the bacteria, saliva and other elements of the mouth which most likely caused recurrent decay to develop since it would be impossible for you to clean these canals. If the tooth fractured or broke, the tissue may have even grown up over the broken parts of the tooth. This tissue can become infected causing swelling, pain and odor. The root tips of this tooth are probably infected or have been abscessed causing intermittent pain and inflammation.

I would suggest that you return to your dentist for an examination and either an extraction or possible treatment. The tooth may not be restorable, depending on how long its been since your treatment and the condition of the tooth now. I would advise that you get the tooth taken care of by treatment or extraction, so you can eliminate the constant infection, which can destroy bone when left untreated and rid you of the offensive odor.
