Has anyone had their wisdom teeth out and NOT taken heavy-duty (or any) painkill!

Question: I'm getting all four wisdom teeth out tomorrow morning (oh joy!) I've never had any problems with them; in fact, i would never have even known i HAD wisdom teeth if the dentist hadn't pointed it out to me, haha. But here I am. Anyway, I'm a pretty natural person, and I'm opposed to taking painkillers unless i am in AGONY because 1) i am rather good at handling pain and 2) since the medicines are unnatural, why bother with unpleasant side effects or extra chemicals that my system will just have to flush out?

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated :)

I think it's down to each individual and how much pain they are in and, yes, how they handle pain. I barely took any pain killers, though I did take some, as I recall. How bad it ends up being has to do with how bad your wisdom teeth are and why your dentist is removing them - are they impacted, just getting in the way, etc.

I had all four done at the same time, and, as I recall, at least two, if not all four, were impacted. My mom was very careful about the pain killers b/c she didn't want me hooked, and I barely used half the bottle. I don't see why you couldn't skip them altogether, if your pain is moderate enough. Mostly your jaw will ache for a few days, and you'll be sucking food through a straw (so annoying, lol). Buy ice packs and ice cream and just keep yourself numb :) And I'd ask your oral surgeon what else they would recommend. I'm sure you could take an over-the-counter drug like Aleve or Tylenol for swelling/aches instead of something hardcore, to at least help with the discomfort.

Good luck! It's not the most fun procedure, but I barely remember it (and it was only six years ago), which probably means the pain was minimal :D

Yes i am quite lucky like you in the point of handling pain i have had one wisdom tooth out and it was fine after if you are to worried ask your dentist to do 2 one day and 2 the next. about 2-3 after your just left there playing with this strange g=hloe in your mouth!!! LOL G luck

Make sure you keep Ice on your cheek area that will help the pain and swelling of the wisdom teeth being pulled..

i just had to take low amounts of lowerlab for a couple of days, till i got a dry socket

I just had my wisdom teeth out last December, and I don't bother to take any painkillers.

A bit recount on my experience. The most painful part when the dentist inject the anesthetic to your gum. After that you don't really feel much pain. Post surgery the worst thing is not thing you'll feel is the fact that somepeople find it a bit hard to understand you. You'll go "En uw ho'wd dchiz fowrl a sag" when you want someone to hold something for you. And the fact that you probably can't eat hard stuff like nuts or fried foods (nuggets, etc). But the next day I could already eat fried food though I didn't dare eating nuts.

A bit of advice, your doctor will tell you when the anesthetis will wear off. I slept starting an hour before it does and when I wake up I didn't feel any pain at all (the one that people tell me will appear after the anesthetic wears of), no painkiller needed.

Ow yeah, my dentist also said to eat cold food after surgery, and if it swells after the anesthetic wears off eat warm food to widen the blood vessels and stop the swelling.

Good luck then,
Cheers.
