Lower jaw growing faster than upper jaw?!

Question:

Lower jaw growing faster than upper jaw?

My 9 year old daughter grinds her teeth when sleeping. Now her lower jaw is slightly wider than the upper one, as it seems it is growing faster. The dentist told me she will need something like a plate mounted on her lower jaw, to keep it from growing too fast. She also got a custom made night guard. Will this help her to get over this grinding, and will it make both jaws grow even?

She is indeed being treated by an orthodontist (not a dentist) as part of her schoolprogram. I checked on the papers.
Thanks!

Answers:

It is normal for children to grind their teeth. She probably has an underjet, which can be resolved with orthodontic therapy (braces) when she is old enough, unless she qualifies for interceptive ortho.

Good luck, don't worry, she's young and it probably bothers you more than her!!
