Question: You can get nail polish from pharmacies that tastes HORRIBLE but isn't harmful to you. Put it on his thumb nail and he won't want to but his finger in his mouth because it tastes so bad.
Or you could get a picture of some dreadful, scary looking orthodontic corrective head gear and tell him this is what he will have to wear if he keeps sucking his thumb.

It would have been easier to stop him when he first started. When he starts doing pull his hand out. Get his mind off of it. Ask him if he wants candy or something.
draw a picture book of what can happen if he keeps sucking on his thumb...he'll get too scared and wont do it anymore
