my mom just went to the dentist and they she had a tooth infection and they gave her some penicilln to take for the pain but it does not seem to help and her mouth is very sowlen is there any thing that could help her with the pain. she also wants to know if it is bad to put something hot on the tooth

Do not put a hot pack on it. A hot pack will increase circulation in the area and just make the swelling worse.
One needs follow the instructions when taking the antibiotics. You need to take each dose on-time and finish the whole course without interruption for it to work right. And as aforementioned it takes time after starting the antibiotics to bring an infection under control-- It will not happen right after the first dose.
Go back to the dentist as soon as possible if following the Rx did not help.
