I just got my pallad expander and...?!

Question:

I just got my pallad expander and...?

Damn! It hurts like hell! Man, I don't know what to do! I cant eat, I cant swallow, I cant spit, and I cant talk! How can i help improve my speech for sounding all slobery and spitty? How can I eat with out food going over my expander? How can I have an easy way to turn the expander with out using a mirror?

Please help. P.S. Any stories would be appreciated.

Answers:

Both my younger daughters either have worn or wear a pallet expander. It is very difficult at the beginning. Your mouth sees this as a foreign object so you secrete more saliva as a way to wash the object away. Don't dispair. Eventually, usually a couple of weeks, your mouth will be familiar with the annoying appliance and you'll stop all the drooling. By then you'll not be spitting on your friends so much when you talk. Just try to remember to swallow frequently before you start to talk unless you want to give your friends and family an embarrasing spit shower.
Ask your mom for some tylenol or ibuprofin for the pain.
As for the key, I always turned the key for them because it's pretty hard to do on your own. When my oldest was away from home she would kind of feel for the hole with her tongue then guide the key into place.
As for eating usually soft foods at first. Things like mashed potatoes, jello, pudding and such. The girls said veggie soup is the worst! The vegs get stuck up in it. There are special brushes to clean it though.
I hope this helps. The first few weeks are the hardest and most annoying. Eventually you'll get used to it then you'll be ready to remove it. In the end you'll have a beautiful smile and it will have been all worth it.

Good luck hun.
