Tooth extraction with local anesthesia?!
Question: I am so scared of the dentist, my upper right molar had a cavity in the beginning of last year, i went to the dentist when i part of it broke off, but i was so scared to have local anesthesia cause i thought i would feel it & hear it. The total was over 500$ up front with military insurance? we couldnt afford it so I said I would wait, now I have 3 wisdom teeth coming in even though the dentist said they probably wouldnt. I need the broken one out! Im trying to get pregnant though and I should be ovulating soon, if i become pregnant can i still have this done? and with local anesthesia can you really feel the pressure and hear the sounds of the tooth coming out? ahh god, nothing to graphic, im gonna end up with an infection cause im so terrified and keep putting this off

Your best bet is to have them all out as soon as possible. If you are trying to get, or might be pregnant, do not use nitrous, it can cause a miscarriage. General anesthesia would be a no-no too. The IV drugs would not be good for the developing fetus. Local would be the way to do it. Go to an oral surgeon, have a consultation and explain your situation. They should be able to give you financial options and help you feel more comfortable with the surgery. I have had teeth removed with just a local anesthetic. It's noisy and you feel pressure, not the most fun experience in the world, but not the worst either. You definitely want to have the broken tooth extracted, just to keep your health great for the pregnancy. Good Luck!
I had my wisdom teeth removed with local anesthetics. As soon as they came out I got one side removed. I do feel that having a mouth full of hurt isn't the best solution. I will tell you honestly, that the longer you wait , the more it will hurt. The first time I felt nothing. When the freezing finally wore off, I was in pain. Thank you pharmacist. The second time, I was in so much pain, he couldn't give me enough anesthetic. But I was able to eat right after and felt no pain when I got home.
I think that you could really consider the health of your teeth. Your baby is going to be living there for a few months and I think it's unfair for him/her to have bacteria going down with the food that you provide it.
Talk to the Dentist about the drugs used. You may even have to ask your doctor or OB/GYn about pain care. And you can always bring you mp3 player. Good luck :))
I also had three teeth removed without anesthesia and it did not hurt at all. The dentist frooze my teeth using a needle and when they extracted my teeth, all i felt was pressure. After the extraction there is slight pain and bleeding, but it only last for a 1 - 2 days
It's not that big a deal to get all 4 wisdom teeth out with just the local and LOTS cheaper and LOTS faster. Get nitrous oxide (laughing gas), a topical gel to numb your gums and then the shots.
Yes you can feel the pressure and 'hear' what's going on, but with nitrous, you shouldn't really care :) Have your pain killer prescription filled before you go in, and (with dentist permission) take it an hour before your appointment. I got mine done without the nitrous and just the pain killer.
Honestly the worst part was just getting the numbing shots, it always the worst part, that's how I learned I should take my pain killer prescription BEFORE the appointment!
You 'should' do it before you get pregnant if you want to do it with general anesthesia, or even with the laughing gas. If you have to do it while pregnant with general, they'll want you to put it off until your second trimester and that's a horrible time to deal with your teeth!
You can also schedule a visit to Mexico. It will be even less expensive in most places. Is the $500 with a military dentist or an off post dentist? You can also look for a dental school in your area.
The infection is worse. Make the appointment ASAP if it's really a risk to get the broken tooth out. The root canal for the infection I got later in a fractured tooth(I didn't know it was fractured) made the extractions look like a cake walk.
I had all my wisdom teeth removed without the anesthesia, just the Novocaine, I had 2 at separate times and 2 together. There was no real pain, just pressure, after when the Novocaine wore off it did hurt but they do give you pain meds, and make sure you take them. If you think you feel ok and say I won't take them after a while they will hurt more and it will take a while before the pain killers work. You should do this before you get pregnant, you don't want the pain meds in your system, and pregnancy puts a strain on your oral health. People are advised to watch their teeth and gums especially during pregnancy, puberty, menopause and during your period. Don't worry it isn't that bad!!
PS It is a shame we don't provide better for our military personnel, if you are defending our country or us your medical and dental bills should be on us, or on U.S.
If it as an ordinary extraction of an ordinary molar then you really don't need to have it done under gas though I had it when young. I preferred to have gas for that (did not have to pay to be knocked out though as minor and it was under British NHS) but did have it done once under local. There is just a bit of pressure for a bit and then it is out. It's not really a big deal and some fillings I've had have been more unpleasant.
Wisdom teeth are quite different though. Sometimes if it's one it's not much different to having an ordinary molar out but sometimes it is really prolonged and can be painful even if only one. If you are having all three out it is best to have it done under general anasthetic. Wisdom teeth don't need to come out though unless they are causing probs.
I agree with kitty, your first responder. Your health is what will affect the baby's health.
$500 is not a lot of money compared to the cost of what might be irreversible damage by not getting the procedure done. Will you be able to go through with child birth if you cannot even have a couple teeth removed? Child birth is much more painful and longer lasting than the pain of tooth extraction.
