Mercury can cause severe neurological problems. Mercury vaporizes at a relatively low temperature and inhaling a small amount of the vapors can cause permanent injury.

Yes, mercury is very dangerous. The saying "mad as a hatter" was coined because hat makers used to use mercury and they would touch it and sniff it day after day, which made them mentally crazy.

The amt of mercury used in fillings is so small, that it doesn't matter. If you are not comfortable with sillver fillings, then request composite, or white fillings.

Too much mercury is bad. yet we find mercury all around us. its in the fish we eat and in some "old" dental work. The key is limmited the amount of mercury in put into you body.
as far as what you see in dental work you should be ok.
