Answers:

Your mother will qualify for free dentures on the NHS if:

*she or her partner receives pension credit guarantee credit (NOT any other type of pension credit, or a basic pension unfortunately)

*she or her partner are named on a current HC2 NHS charges certificate

*she has, or is named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate

*she, or her partner receives income support or income based jobseekers allowance

If none of these apply the new NHS dentures fall into NHS charges band 3, which is (as of April 2007) £194. This amount will also include all other treatment that is necessary and available on the NHS at the same time.

HC2 charges certificates are for those people on a low income for whatever reason - including students and older persons. They entitle you to help with all types of costs including dental, optical and prescription charges. You can get the form from any NHS doctors or dental practice and many pharmacies as well. It is an option well worth considering for anyone on a low income, as although the form is a little time consuming to complete, you have nothing to lose and everythign to gain!

Private dentures vary enormously in cost, depending on the number of teeth they replace and the materials they are made from. They are usually upwards of £200.
