Question:

Dental "Cocktail"????-I think I need to be put to sleep, plz help!?

My dentist is pulling two wisdom teeth, I may need a root canal and most definitly a filling. They have prescribed a cocktail of pills: Demerol, Phenergan and Ativan. I am scared because the ppl at the dentist office said it's a conscience sedation. I think I need to be put to sleep. When I was younger I got my teeth pulled for braces and they put me under....... Can anyone tell me if this is enough sedation for me not to feel anything?

Answers:

I know the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology does not recommend the use of giving oral cocktails of drugs. It's riskier than using one classification of drug. I sedate people orally, but I only use one class of drug. I do use Ativan (Lorazepam) but never in conjunction with narcotics (the Demerol) or Phenergan. If you're a healthy adult (good heart, not obese) then the odds of something terrible happening are quite low. You'll probably be fine, but tell the dentist how you're doing during the procedure. The best part about the sedation is that it should feel like the procedure took 30 minutes even if it really lasted 3 hours.
