Daughter's tooth broke off at the gum?!

Question:

Daughter's tooth broke off at the gum?

She is 6 and her tooth broke off, how will the dentist go about fixing this or getting it out? Will it have to be cut out? Do they give shots to children or do they use gas? She is so terrified when I mention the dentist

Answers:

I am a dentist so I will tell you what I would do, but it is only speculation with out seeing an xray or knowing what tooth it is. If it is a permenant tooth and not below the bone level, it can easily be fixed (assuming that the nerve is exposed) with a rooth canal and a post and core build up with a crown. If it is a baby tooth, the dentist will xray to see where permenant tooth is and if it is close will let nature take its course. He may have to maintain space if the permenant tooth is not close to coming in.
As far as the gas or the novacain (which by the way they don't even make novacaine anymore they use lidocaine most of the time or septocaine seems to be the popular choice of late) I use both. The gas works to calm the patient and the anesthetic works to numb the area so that no pain can be felt. Some pedodontist use strickly gas on children but I think that if you have to jack up the child so high on N2O2 then why not go ahead and give the shot in case you lose the gas due to patient nausea, which happens a lot when gas is used at too high a concentration.
The funny thing about dentistry and I guess medicin in general, it is up to the individual dentist choice what the best course of treatment is. Not too many right or wrong decisions.

Hope this helps
