How to build up my tooth enamel?!

Question: I like to do apple cider vinegar 3 x per day for health benefits. It works great, but I've noticed my teeth have become more sensitive. I have always mixed it with baking soda and warm water to protect my teeth, but appearantly that wasn't enough. What else can I do? Is there any way to rebuild the enamel and make it stronger? Thanks -

There's a product called tooth mousse, don't know if you can get it in the states, but it's huge here and recommended by dentists all the time. Basically it remineralises your teeth, decreases sensitivity and improves the health of your mouth in general. In short, it helps rebuild your tooth, whether people like to admit it or not :)

I've had two friends who had teeth on the 'watchlist' and the tooth mousse rebuilt both the enamel and the pending cavity so they didn't have to have it filled. I've been using it myself for a couple of months and have noticed a huge difference - my teeth are much less sensitive, are shiny and healthier and my dentist has noticed an improvement in my own 'watchlist' tooth, the shadow has decreased by half already (hopefully this means I won't have to have it filled either!).

I also take a calcium supplement, coenzyme q10 and xylitol based mouthwash.

Give these a try if you can get them, I'm sure you'll find they help :) I know a lot of dentists etc. say you can't rebuild your enamel and my comments above will be put down, but most dentists in NZ use a lot of preventative therapy based on alternative methods, their goal is to rebuild what is there naturally without resorting to all those expensive cosmetic treatments. Seeing as a tube of tooth mousse costs $20 and a filling costs $270, I don't think they'd recommend it if it didn't work, after all, they're losing money on it.

Citrus fruits have something in them that destroyes enamel and brushing to hard does the same. Try avoiding either of those things.

I'm a dentist.

First off, how are you consuming the apple cider vinegar? Are you rinsing with it? Drinking it?

If it's either of the above, you're wasting your time. Completely.

As for the sensitivity, there's a perfectly good explanation for that: the acid in the vinegar (acetic acid) is etching your teeth and may even be destroying your enamel (the dense mineral surface of your teeth).

Acids etch the tooth, meaning they do the following: 1. remove the ultra-thin biofilm that covers your teeth and 2. makes the enamel rougher and more porous (you may have even noticed your teeth feeling gritty after you expose them to the vinegar). In areas where the enamel is thin, it is possible that you have allowed stimulants (such as hot or cold or sweet) to reach the dentin, which itself is more porous than the enamel. Thus, stimulants (hot/cold/sugar etc.) can reach all the way down to the pulp, which transmits only sensations of pain when stimulated.

Dispense with the vinegar treatments.

Suck the apple cider through a straw and keep it away from your teeth. Make sure it goes straight through your mouth, don't swish it around your teeth.
Enamel can not be "rebuilt" once it has been lost. Other than placing a filling or doing a crown on the tooth there is no way to build back a tooth. Use Sensodyne toothpaste to get rid of sensitivity.
