Sugar Free Gum OK for teeth?!

Question:

Sugar Free Gum OK for teeth?

I'm in the habit of purchasing sugar free gum, mostly the chicklet sized Excel to combat bad breath. It clearly states its sugar free on the package however the inregeditenst states 1% Carbs/ Glucides (2g) -- Sugar Alcohols / Polyalcools.

The gum can simmer in my mouth for a couple hours, even be situated on a back tooth for quite some time. My question is, can such self-proclaimed sugar free gum still promote tooth decay?

If Excel does still promote tooth decay can you please suggest an alternative product to combat possible bad breath at work but still not contribute to tooth decay. I live in Ontario Canada, if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

Answers:

look for gum that had xylitol in it. I know most of the Trident gum has it now, it should say it on the front. Xylitol is a sweetener that prevents cavities. Xylitol use reduces tooth decay rates both in high-risk groups (high caries prevalence, poor nutrition, and poor oral hygiene) and in low risk groups (low caries incidence using all current prevention recommendations). Sugarfree chewing gums and candies made with xylitol as the principal sweetener have already received official endorsements from six national dental associations.
Studies using xylitol as either a sugar substitute or a small dietary addition have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in new tooth decay, along with arrest and even some reversal of existing dental caries. Xylitol provides additional protection that enhances all existing prevention methods. This xylitol effect is long-lasting and possibly permanent. Low decay rates persist even years after the trials have been completed.

the guy below me is correct, do NOT let your pet have any artificial sweetener, especially xylitol. Its poison to them. Its not like chocolate where they can have a little here and there, this is much more serious so keep your gum and other items with sweetener up on a high shelf
