There are quite a few aspescts to the answer to this question.... (please read the whole thing, the good part is at the end!)

Yes, you can get cavities from gum. Kind of the same as you can get cavities from anything sugary. Sugar breaks down into the acid that causes tooth decay.

A sugar-free gum is much better than regular gum and isn't likely to cause decay because of the lack of sugar. However, all sugar free gums are not "good for your teeth". They just aren't bad for your teeth....

(here's the good part) Look for a sugar free gum that contains XYLITOL. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that has actually been proven to HELP teeth, rather than hurt them! Research has shown that it actually helped remineralize areas of the teeth that had small decay forming. In addition, it has been proven to fight plaque and calculus. Plaque is the leading cause of periodontal disease (a big term for LOTS of teeth trouble).

So if you love gum, sugar free is good- but sugar free with XYLITOL is the best choice.

Yes, if the gum has sugar in it.

If you want an asnwer for a dentist you should go to your dentist and ask. Usually it is only gum that contains sugar in it that will create cavaties. But if you eat a lot of candy or food and you don't clean your teeth such as with flossing and regular brushing, it can also cause cavities. Trident is a good gum which says it is supposed to clean your teeth if you chew it after you eat. In order to be sure, go ask your dentist. Just check to see the sugar content of the gum you chew before you chew it. If it is sugar free then there is not much you have to worry about if you don't eat too much candy and other treats and keep your teeth clean.

chewing gum with sugar in it will cause cavities. Chewing gum that is sugarless can actually reduce the chances of getting cavities because it clean off your teeth when you chew it.

If the gum or candy has sugar in it, yes it will hurt your teeth if chewed in excess. I would limit it to 1 piece a day, if that. Orbit, Trident, and Extra are sugarfree and actually can be good for your teeth if you chew it after eating. Gum stimulates the salivary glands which makes your mouth water, thus flushing away the bacteria in your mouth that's left after eating. You can pretty much chew all the sugarfree gum you want, but one note of caution, sugarfree gum usually contains an artificial sweetner that can cause and upset stomach, gas or diahrea

Last time I looked Trident was sugarless. Sugarless gums are safe; gums with sugar can cause cavities.

if it doesn't have sugar in it , then it won't cause cavities
