How long before permanent crown can I have temporary "thing" safely?!

Question:

How long before permanent crown can I have temporary "thing" safely?

Sorry if it's unclear.
I had a very expensive root canal done recently. So now it was time for a crown fitting. My dentist couldn't put a temporary crown for some reason so he put some pink thing, looks like a chewing gum, on and he said I had to come back for a permanent to be put in after 10 days. The thing is, I'm going on holiday and will not be back until 2 weeks after today's procedure.
Is it safe? I don't want to risk losing my tooth alltogether because of my holiday. Should I cancel my holiday? What happens if that pink thing falls out?

Answers:

They normally put a temp crown on before putting the permanent crown on in case the patient suffers any discomfort in between visits.
As you have had a root canal carried out you wont have a vital tooth so you should not feel any discomfort .
Temporary crowns are called this because that's their function, to be there on a short term basis.
You wont lose your tooth, so you can safely go on holiday, if your worried about it falling out whilst your away you can buy some very good DIY dental kits from most major chemists!
