Answers:

In the United States there is a network of organizations called Area Agencies on Aging. There is an Area Agency on Aging serving every community in the United States and in U.S. territories. These folks know about different organizations that need workers in the field of caregiving or companions. Since qualifications vary by state and territory, they would also know about the requirements for the kind of work your mom is wanting to do. They also may be able to connect your mom to an individual or family caregiver who needs immediate help.

You or your mom can call toll-free 1-800-677-1116 to find the contact information for the specific Area Agency on Aging where you live that can help you get the information you need. Call the Area Agency on Aging and ask to speak with the staff person who handles the "Family Caregiver" or "In-Home Care" program. Your mom should tell this person that she seeks employment as a caregiver and ask them questions about possible work in the area and qualifications. She should also ask them for organizations in the area that might be looking for home companions or paid caregivers.

While education requirements and experience will vary by what state you are in and what type of job she wishes to do, credible organizations and potential employers will require a background check.

I hope this helps. Best wishes and good luck to you and your mom!
