TMJ Problems?!

Question:

TMJ Problems?

I was just diagnosed with TMJ. What kind of Doctor do you see for this who knows what they are doing?? I was diagnosed at urgent care when my jaw pain got so bad i could barely eat or speak or drink.

Answers:

A multidisciplinary approach is definitely the best but the ONLY practitioner who should be directing the treatment is a dentist who understands the relationship of the TMJ to a patient's bite. The treatment (assuming your diagnosis is correct) will probably consist of two phases. Phase one will utilize splint therapy (not a nightguard but rather a 24/7 appliance) to properly align the lower jaw with the upper jaw. Phase two will most likely utilize orthodontics to make permanent the realignment of the jaws.

Adjunct therapies might include chiropractics, massage therapy, biofeedback and physical therapy.

The earlier the problem is treated the more likely you will have 100% reversal of symptoms and no permanent damage to the joint.

TMJ symptoms include: frequent headaches, neck aches, backaches, pain on chewing, ringing or buzzing in the ears, sinus "fullness", facial pain, inability to focus, depression and others.
