Has anyone had dental implants?

How do you feel afterward? Also how long ago did you have them put in and with which type of material is the implant made of? I am concerned that the metals that the dentist use will have a negative affect on my whole body. Is it hopeless to even consider implants if osteoporosis and periodontal disease are some things I am battling right now and will negatively affect the outcome of implants in the future?

Your question with regards to the osteoporosis and periodontal disease are good ones. Depending on the amount of your bone that you have lost will depend on whether you are eligible for implants. There are situations where the attending dentist (periodontist, oral surgeon) can use some types of bone grafting to see if they can build up your bone before they place the implant. There are several factors to consider before the dentist will decide if they are right for you. The implants are made out of titanium and are very strong. I have two implants and have never regretted paying the pretty penny for them. Many years back before I had dental insurance, or any money, I had two teeth extracted when I was about twenty. Numbers twenty and two. After hygiene school I decided to go ahead and have implants placed. I have/had good bone support, and no periodontal disease. The process was easy and painless. From start to finish the whole process, because of the bone integration/healing around the implant took about six months before I had the final crowns placed. I had to pay about five thousand out of pocket for all of the work. Since I am a dental professional I got a fifty percent discount off of my implants placement, basically buy one get one free is how it worked out. I also got a 10 percent discount off of my permanent crowns. Since I have worked at the same practice now for over two years I get all of my dental work free. However I have my teeth cleaned by a friend of mine at another office that my family frequents. Since I am the only hygienist at the office I work at it is a little hard for me to clean my own teeth, and to take x-rays. Doc could do it however he is so busy that I hate to ask him. Sorry to go off on a tangent, getting implants was one of the best things that I have done, dental-wise that is. Make sure that you find a good dentist to get your work done. I elected to have an oral surgeon place mine, because he is so good. And I refer everyone interested in implants to him because he did such a good job. However their are periodontists, dentists and oral surgeons who can do equally as good of a job, just make sure to check with your general dentist for referrals. Good luck.
