Does everyone get wisdom teeth?!

Does everyone get wisdom teeth?

i'm 27 and have none

I have 28 teeth, straight, no gaps, seems like there would be room for more...do i have the normal amount for my age....i have quite a large mouth.

Not everyone gets their third molars. this is due to the fact that our jaws are much smaller than now than in pre-historic man who needed the third molars for their diet. Over generations, in some people/families,our bodies have learned that we don't need them and/or have not got enough room for them, so genetically the pathway has not been laid down for them to form. Have other members of your family got or had their wisdom teeth?

A dentist can take an x-ray of you jaw that would show if they are forming or not (an orthopantomograph) but he or she would only do this if there was a real need to investigate their whereabouts(pain or discomfort) Your dentist will not wish to expose you to unnecessary x- rays.

Finally, My Gran had a wisdom tooth decide to come through when she was approximately 85 and wore full dentures. When her dentist explained what was happening, she was not impressed, thought he was making it all up and caused quite a scene. However, she finally agreed that if the dentist was able to show her it on an x-ray, then it must be there! She had that one extracted, a new denture made and then a couple of years later, another one decided to come through....the air was blue!! (she is now 90)
