Just got braces and an extender...how long before I can talk right?!

Question: I had braces and a palette extender put in my mouth on thursday. The extender is to widen my upper jaw so that the teeth have room to move. Who has had one and how long will it affect my speech. I find myself slurring alot. Also, how long do extenders have to stay in your mouth?

I wore my rapid palette expander for 8 months - speech will get better with it once you are more used to it. It took me a few weeks to get used to it and after a while speech was pretty much normal - the only problem after that was food getting stuck! Good luck!

With that kind of double whammy? I'd say at least a week. Just keep in mind that your speech won't be completely the same - a lot of that depends on tongue movement, which is partially determined by the location of your teeth, which are now moving.

Expanders are usually in for...a month or two? I'm not real sure, I never had that bit of orthodontic bliss.

Not too long, there isnt a set time you will just get used to it. I say about 2 weeks at the most. I wore one of those for a year before i could even get braces put on, then i wore the braces for 2 years. But my teeth were perfect when they were taken off. Too bad i didnt wear my retainer like i was suppose to cause now im 27 and have to wear them again on my bottom teeth.
