Answers:

gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. there is bleeding and soreness often involved with it as well. is there something wrong with you? not necessarily, sometimes gingivits can be a side effect of medications...but...it is mostly associated with oral hygiene care. i know, you brush and use a mouthwash...but you are missing the area you need to clean the most if your gums are infected....you are not getting your gums clean enough!
flossing is the most proven way to effectively clean the gingival tissues! but more importantly it is they way you use the floss that helps keep them healthy.
many people who "floss" actually 'pop' the floss in and out of the teeth, just enough to break the contact (the point where two teeth touch). to make flossing effective one has to manipulate the floss so that it wraps around one side of the tooth like a "C" and rub that side of the tooth down into the gums. in the mirror it may look like the floss is going to the midpoint of the tooth (under the gum). you should repeat the process on all teeth on both sides of the tooth.
be aware that you will have and should expect bleeding and soreness with flossing (if you do not floss properly now) for the first couple days. it should, however, only take 10-14 days for your gums to heal completely. by the end of 2weeks you should be able to look in the mirror after you floss and look for bleeding...if there are areas that bleeding remain then those are the areas that you are missing. bleeding indicates infection and bacterial activity.
keep in mind that healthy tissue does not bleed! if you brush your hair and your scalp bled all the time, of if you brush your arm against something and it kept bleeding all the time you would want to make it better! your mouth is no different.
if after some tiem you are still not getting the hang of the flossing thing, talk to your dental hygienist and make her show you how to properly floss and get to the hard to reach areas.
if you want to get a great...and i mean great toothbrush...get the sonicare elite! it is wonderful. be sure to fill out the warranty and garantee because if you do not care for it or the results at your next cleaning...philips will refund your money...what do you have to lose. hte technology behind the brush kills the bacteria as it brushes it away...and the motion stimulate the gums bringing needed white blood cells to the area to help fight the infection! it is a wonderful brush that i recommend to many of my patients..and use myself! and no, i am not a sonicare rep! lol.....
one more thing...if gingivitis goes untreated it leads to periodontal disease..that is where the bacteria has not only attacked the gums but also the bone and boneloss and mobility may be involved. in this case...you may have special needs that can be discussed with you by your dental professional. you should see one if you do not currently have one to have an evaluation as to the current condition of your oral health...the recommendation is every 6 months, but in some cases we see patients every 3-4 months...call for an appointment!
