(for braces wearers please) do you actually listen to your orthodontist?!

Question:

(for braces wearers please) do you actually listen to your orthodontist?

how many of you actually stopped eating caramel and popcorn, gummy bears, gum and stuff due to what your ortho said? i'm getting braces soon, and i'm not sure i can go 1 1/2 years w/o any of those. i also have friends who occasionaly break the rules. what about you?

Answers:

If you absolutely cannot live without the "no-no" foods, then you have to be willing to deal with the possible results. As an ortho assistant, I saw brackets and bands loosened which resulted in multiple extra trips to the office; I saw treatments go on for longer than planned as the patient didn't want to come in and fix these so as not to admit any wrongdoing. I also saw the yellow, green, and sometimes brown stains left on teeth after the appliances were removed, as the sticky foods got into pretty impossible areas to clean with the braces on. Yes, people do break the rules; but consider the fact that braces are an investment in yourself. Why go through 18+ months of therapy just to have to spend even more time and money on fillings and bleaching?
