How Come I Didn't Wear My RETAINER For Almost A Year, and My Teeth Haven't Budge!

Question:

How Come I Didn't Wear My RETAINER For Almost A Year, and My Teeth Haven't Budged?

I just put them on now, it feels like my teeth didnt move at all, and I seldomly wore it from the start once i got my braces off, & i got them off 2 years ago.... whats the deal?

Is there even a point to Retainers?
or is it just a scheme from the orthodontists just so they could get EXTRA '$$$' ?

My dentist said that i should wear my retainer or else , she said they will budge and move within a few weeks or months, she doesnt know that i didnt wear it for almost a year, is she lying? (cuz my teeth havent moved at all)

Answers:

The reason why teeth move after orthodontic treatment is because the oral musculature wants the teeth to conform to its balance, which was the case when the teeth were crooked. When the orthodontist moves the teeth to a straighter position, the balance of the oral muscles and the fibers that are holding the teeth to the supporting tissue want to bring the teeth back to the way they used to. The reason why your teeth did not move after they got straighter is because, first, they were not very crooked to being with and second, the orthodontist somehow managed to bring your teeth to a position that conforms to the oral musculature balance (which is quite rare, but it happens), this is either a strike of luck or the orthodontist is very proficient and was able to do so with very light orthodontic forces that allow the musculature balance to reprogram with the teeth as they move to their new position. He/she may have also done a ‘fibrotomy’ (cutting the fibers around the teeth so they don't pull them back to their old positions). Orthodontists do no prescribe retainers for extra cash; they recommend them because they are really needed for the vast majority of cases, but not all ;)
