Hello,
First, I will adress the procedure question. You will be sedated through an IV. You will feel a slight pinch when it is inserted but will soon feel sleepy and will not remember much after that. The drugs used have an amnesia effect, so even after you are awake you will not remember the actual surgery.

You will then be given injections to numb the areas where the extractions will be performed. The procedure for extraction of the teeth can vary depending upon the position of the teeth and the depth of the teeth in bone mass (sometimes the teeth are not above gum tissue--this is called impacted.) Sometimes impacted teeth are lying side-ways (horizantally impacted)

If the teeth are impacted, then the surgery is a bit more detailed. The general idea is to move the tissue away from the teeth, raise the teeth from the bone with instruments called elevators, then remove the the loosened tooth with forceps (plyers.) When a tooth is impacted, the bone must be removed and this is done with the dental handpiece (drill) and a surgical bur. The tooth may be sectioned (cut into peices) to be lifted in sections from the bone. It sounds terrible but really is not too bad. The amount of bone removed is minimal, but the tooth must be exposed in this manner to gain access to the tooth. This type of surgical extraction is bit more traumatic to the patient and may require a longer healing period.

You will not feel any pain during the procedure. After the numbness wears off you can expect some discomfort, but pain medication will help with that. You may also experience some bruising and perhaps soreness in the jaw joint. Sometimes this joint soreness can make it difficult to open your mouth wide for a few days. It is really not as bad as it sounds, within three or four days you should feel fine. If you you experience problems make sure you call the doctor that performed the extractions. Make sure you follow the directions for the care of your mouth given or told to you or your companion. It seems like a really bad and scary thing but it is a routine procedure and easier to tolerate than most people anticipate. My wisdom teeth were all impacted and I did fine. I wasn't even sedated to have them removed. You will be fine too. Good luck, I hope this helped!

I was partially sedated for mine, they sawed the teeth in half and pulled the pieces out. I felt no pain until the next day, and I had some quality pain medicine to help me through the pain. During the operation I had no pain, just the recovery was painful.

They do a good job of knocking you out now. When I was 13 (1978), I had six teeth taken out. I was gassed and felt the whole procedure as if I were awake. By the the I was 18, I had four wisdom teeth removed and didn't feel a thing. A little shot and nighty-night. The biggest problem is post op infections. Keep an eye on the pain and let them know if it lasts. Get antibiotics to counter it if necessary.

i was asleep when they did mine (all 4 at once). It wasn't bad I felt a little icky afterwards but wanted to drive somewhere but my mom wouldn't let me until the next day. the pain wasn't bad, I didn't take the vikadin...it was hard to open my mouth I would recommend listerine pocket patch strips too.

I had all four of mine out last summer, all impacted and not erupted through the gums, with novocaine (numbing) only. The procedure wasn't bad, it only took about an hour.
Afterwards, you'll be told to hold ice on your face for ten minutes on/ten minutes off for several hours to help with swelling. Your face wil probably swell some ("chipmunk cheeks") and you will probably feel some discomfort healing, but nothing you can't handle. I managed it fine with just ibuprofen.
For me, the swelling went down completely by one week after the surgery, getting better and better each day.
You'll also be on a soft foods diet for the first few days, and you can slowly introduce normal foods back in after that.
But overall, don't waste too much of your time worrying about it. If you've had root canals you'll be fine especially...and it's not as bad as everyone says, there's just a lot of hype about it because it's something a lot of people have done.
Good luck, you will be fine. :)

I got all of mine taken out about a year ago. I am not exactly sure about the exact procedure but I can tell you what I went through.

I went to the place and they sat me in a chair. They gave me an IV in my hand and some laughing gas which didn't make me laugh... it made me confused... lol... The doctor came in and tried to talk to me and I was so confused I couldn't even answer the questions. I noticed myself becoming sleepy and I tried to fight it, but before I knew it... I was out!

I don't remember anything about the surgery at all. I just remember waking up. It felt like I was asleep for maybe a few minutes or an hour even though the procedure takes 3 hours. The first thing I remember is a nurse reaching into my mouth and pulling out the gause and putting clean gause in its place. My mother and a nurse helped me to the car. I was aware enough to give my mother direction back to our house from the doctor.

I don't remember any initial pain probablly because I was still drugged up. I sat in my recliner and my mom brought me blankets and pillows and made me nice and comfy. I think I even feel asleep. The next thing I remember is my mom taking out the gause in my mouth and putting new gause in my mouth. I closed my mouth really hard and the gause pressed against the incisions and the most intense pain surged through my mouth. I think I even cried! So I made a mental note to not ever do that again and then I was fine.

I took meds every few hours. They weren't hard core meds, they were just like a really high dosage per pill. I called it "super motrin."

I felt kind of a throbbing, nagging, under the skin, inside the bone pain. It wasn't bad.. it was just there and annoying!

As for eating... I ate regular food that first day! My mom started me out on Chicken noodle soup and then later on gave me a sandwich. Eating was fine for me.

I slept fine except my mom says that I made this sucking noise but I think that is because my mouth was swollen.

Swelling was medium. My cheaks and jaw were swollen for about 3 or 4 days. I put cold packs on my face at first to prevent swelling and then hot packs on my face to sooth the pain.

After 3 days, I was completely fine. I was a little wozzy from being drugged up and laying in bed, but I was up and walking around. I even went to a party!

My family doesn't believe in taking a lot of meds so I was off of those after 3 days as well. I felt some pain but it wasn't something that I couldn't handle. My incisions had closed up and my stitches fell.

I went back for my follow up after 7 days and the doctore was like "wow! you heal really fast!" After that, my life resumed like nothing had ever happened. I feel no pain or discomfort from it. It sounds weird... but I would do it again for the drugs! lol That was the best part!

Good luck!

Hi heyy,

I had impacted teeth on the roof of my mouth ( my 3rd set of front teeth), 3 wisdom teeth removed. You may need a pre-op this is just to make sure you are healthy for the surgery, check your medical records, allergies etc. I was admitted to the hospital, a shot & off to lala land, the surgeon cut them out of course I was totally drugged didn't feel a thing stayed for 2 nights cause I had excessive bleeding. It's the after effect when you wake up & start to recover-that's when the pain sets in good thing for pain killers. Your face maybe somewhat swollen-- use a bag of frozen peas for swelling, some discoloration, of course some bleeding, instructions as to what to do when you arrive back home, someone to drive you home and stay with you at least overnight. Call dentist if anything doesn't seem right. If you should develope a dry socket. Steep tea bags into hot water & then cool enough so you can put into your mouth & chomp down on the tea bags this is the only thing that helped my dry socket. Relax, rest, take prescribed drugs if you need more don't hesitate to call the dentist & get more, antibotics, soft diet when you can eat, gurggle, swish salt water to help heal the mouth, popsicles, many malts helped. Have a good night & good luck.. :0)
Additional Details: better to know what to expect, all people heal differently. I took 2 weeks off for vacation before I had this done to make sure I healed, no pain or for that matter I had seriously discoloration-from black & blue to yellowish skin color.

hi!! u will be okay it feels like nothing happened, i had mine taken out a few months ago. at first they will give u laughing gas which will make u loopy and a little sleepy. then they give u the iv and u are knocked out so fast. u will be okay!!
