I had a molar pulled and I'm in pain?!

Question: I had a molar extracted on Friday afternoon and it still hurts quite a bit. My gums are swollen and I have a slight throbbing pain, there is no bleeding and I have been taking penicillin to avoid getting an infection. How long does the pain last and should it be getting better instead of worse? Help!

It can last up to a week. Your dentist probably advised you to take an anti-inflammatory pain reliever (such as ibuprofin). Stay on top of it- don't miss a dose! If you let the pain get ahead of you, you'll be miserable. Also, the pain usually peaks on the third day, so hopefully you'll start feeling better soon. I just had my wisdom teeth removed two weeks ago and I had the same issues (I took 200 mg of ibuprofin every 4 hours). Good luck!

You may have a dry socket, they hurt just as much as a toothache. Give you dentist a call and have him check the area out, there should be no charge
