I have more severe pain AFTER my root canal than I did before...?!

Question: I had a root canal Saturday and I have been in EXCRUCIATING pain ever since. Nothing is helping, I'm eating vicodin, percocet, and ibuprofen like candy and I'm still very miserable. Especially at night. What could this be and why am I still hurting? I thought root canals destroyed the nerve that causes the pain????

The likely cause is an abcess (infection) under the root. The dentist should have allowed your tooth a couple of days to drain the infection prior to sealing it with a crown. If it does not improve, they may need to open it up again and allow the infection to drain

You may have developed an infection and need antibiotics.

First off, schedule a consult or revaluation with your dentist so he can take a look. Inflammation is one possibility and after some root canals the patients will be in some pain for a short time afterwards because the tooth has to heal from the procedure. Nonetheless, your dentist, at the very least, should have prescribed you a good medication to relieve the pain. The healing process can take weeks. Nonetheless, the best advice is to see your dentist again and make sure everything is good.
