What do braces feel like?!

Question: I am 16 years old and have to get braces because I have an overbite from many years as a little girl sucking my thumb. I have heard stories like they make your mouth hurt, they crack your lips and they are even painful when they are getting taken off. I already have the appointment made (I didn't make it my mom did) but I really want her to cancel because I'm not too fond of pain. Before I go crazy can someone tell me what they REALLY feel like and if it would be good for me to get them?

Don't you dare cancel that appointment. Braces aren't always fun, but they're excellent in the long run.

Yeah, your mouth hurts sometimes and they can dig into your cheeks. Mine haven't really caused my lips to crack more than usual, but petroleum jelly will fix that up in no time flat.

Having them hurt when getting taken off depends on what kind of brackets you get. Usually your run-of-the-mill metal ones won't hurt as far as I can tell, but the ceramic ones will hurt more because they have to use a different kind of adhesive.

I m suffering from the same fear as my teeth r also not perfect n will soon get braces.....I m 15....

I had them, but I was a lot younger than you are right now...and it was also quite awhile ago, braces now I know are quite a bit different than when I was a child, but I hated them, they did hurt.

braces do not hurt when they are put in. you can feel some tightness to pain about 3-4 hours after it is fitted as it loosens your teeth from the bone to start moving them. this pain will depend on your pain threshold and will affect you differently from any other person. you would normally only feel this for a few days.

your lips will crack if they are dry, just like in the winter you may get cracked lips, use some lip balm as you normally would, and put some on before they are placed if they are dry on the day.

during the treatment at the adjustment visits you may sometimes experience different levels of tightness and sometimes pain a while after the adjustments, but this is temporary again for a couple of days.

when the braces are removed you only hear a clicking noise as the braces are removed, then a drill is used to rattle the glue off to reveal your pearly whites, this drill is not a dentist drill, its like a high powered toothbrush designed to get the glue only, it cannot damage your teeth as its not powerful enough. the drill wont feel sore but just very rattly as it vibrates.

if you ever do feel pain take some paracetamol if you are not allergic to it, or co-codamol if its a strong pain again if your not allergic to it, i would not recommend ibruprofen/neurofen as these do not deal with dental pain.

i would not listen to other peoples experiences of pain as they are not you and you may not feel a thing!

and remember you will have a perfect smile at the end.

im 14 and ive had braces for 6 months

they hurt for a few days and make your lips hurt a bit but you soon get used to it when your lips ajust
when they put them on it doesnt hurt at all unless you get some teeth pulled out and even then the pain is minimal because of painkiller

taking them off is as unpainful as putting them on

there is seriously nothing to worry about
call me wierd but i actualy enjoy having braces and i have seen a great improvment within just 6 months

seriously get it done u wont regret it
dont cancel or u will later wish u had
ever seen these older woman with braces i bet they wish they had had them when the wer younger

TRUST ME GET THEM

i had them twice, plus any other metal mouth appliance you can think of.. there not that bad really. they hurt the first three days and the day you get them tighten or something..
I'm only 15 i had all this mouth work since fourth grade. so yeah, its truly not hat bad, it could be worst..

Okay, let me set you straight here. I have had braces for...several years (soon to come off i hope). I was worried too.

1. they make your mouth hurt/cause pain - if you have a halfway decent dentist, having braces put in or taken off WILL NOT hurt except for maybe a couple of moments as he fits everything in. After having the braces fitted/tightened your mouth will usually be a bit sore but painkillers and soft foods will prevent that being too much of any issue - after a short while you'll get to know what to avoid.

2 - I found the first time, it did feel pretty strange and it dug into my lips, but you should be given special wax to put over your braces incase they cut your lips and before you leave each time a good dentist will ask you if everything feels ok and that nothing sticks into your gum. But anyway, after a while your mouth kind of adjusts to the braces and they don't tend to mess your gums/lips about.

3 - Don't cancel the appointment, ask your dentist to explain what he wants to do it will make you feel more comfortable. DO NOT get braces if you DONT need them - it's a waste of time and energy. However if your dentist thinks you need them - don't worry really!

Hope that helps x

My son had teeth that where not correct so he had to wear braces and now he has perfect teeth, I don't think he had much of a problem with them, I can't remember him ever complaining about them, whatever, if you need them get them done, you will never regret it, especially when you see that beautiful smile looking back at you in the mirror.
