How serious is a chipped molar (no pain included)?!

Question:

How serious is a chipped molar (no pain included)?

I was just poking around on the right side of my mouth (my last molar) when I felt my nail snag slightly. I shone a flashlight in there and lo and behold it looks like a chunk of my molar, near the gum, has gone missing. Nothing hurts, I don't feel a nerve or anything. But I'm worried now about what's going to happen. Will they have to extract it?! Can they just fill it or something with the stuff they use to fill cavities with?

My wisdom teeth were pulled a little over a year ago.

Answers:

The chip may leave your tooth vulnerable to decay, and by the time it starts to hurt, it's too late. If it's restorable, a dentist will either fill it if it's small chip, or cap the tooth if a big chunk is missing.

Don't wait until it starts to hurt, because by then you will either need a root canal or get the tooth pulled.

Get it looked at by a dentist pronto.
