Do you have to wear a retainer after you get your braces off?!

Question: for how long, or is it ok if you wear it at night and not during the day?

Answers: for how long, or is it ok if you wear it at night and not during the day?

YES, YES, YES!!!! Take it from someone who didn't do what the orthodontist told her! If you think wearing the retainer isn't necessary, PLEASE think again!

I remember when I was a teenager, and I finally got the awful things off my teeth, I wasn't about to wear that stupid retainer...after all...my teeth were awesome!!!

Skip ahead 20 years, approximately $6,000.00, and another 2 years to start over again in braces. THAT was worse than the two years of wearing a simple retainer.

I'm sure your teeth are beautiful, and your smile is drop dead gorgeous, but please take my advice and don't neglect the final steps to keep them that way. Your orthodontist is the only one with the knowledge as to how long and how often you will have to wear the "dreaded retainer", so follow his advice.

GL, and congratulations...you've made it thru the hardest part!!

yes you have to wear a retainer once your braces are off, or your teeth will go back to the way they once were- it depends on what your dentist tells you, but im pretty sure youll have to wear them during the day. After youve worn them for a while, and it wont take long till you dont need a retainer, you can wear them during the night only. But it depends on what our dentist says.- in 2 months when my braces are done, im also getting one
?

yes. for about 6 months.

Yes, I wear mine just during the night and i have a metal retainer on my botttom teeth.

Yes and your orthodontist will let you know. For me, I had to wear a retainer at night for as long as I could stand it essentially. My stepdaughter, it seems like she has to wear it all the time except of course when she's eating or drinking.

yeah, your orthodontist will tell you when to wear it.
i was told to wear it all the time, but i only wore it at night and my teeth are still fine....ortho has told me its ok to just wear it at night now anyway.
you may find that when you put the retainer/plate in at night it feels tighter...and this is because the teeth have moved a little, but after a few minutes theyll be back in place.
so dont freak if this happens

I was meant to wear a retainer but I found it disguisting so I 'accidentally' threw it away. oops. I just found that a lot of saliva got stuck on top of it and I could always feel it, it was horrible.

However I would suggest wearing it and putting up with it because my teeth arent as good as they could have been - but I was only 12 so I didint know any better back then!

Yes, you should wear your retainer, otherwise your teeth could very well shift back.

My daughter got her braces off about 6 months ago and was told she *should* wear it all day and night, but if nothing else to wear it at night. HTH.

you have to wear them at night for the rest of your life, or at least until you don't care what they look like anymore. if you stop wearing them, they will shift. it is natural for your teeth to shift over the years, this is why you want to wear them to retain the shape they are now.

Hi. I got my braces off yesterday. And you have to wear them during the day and night usually for the first six months, then you go to night wear. If you dont wear them all the time, your teeth will shift back, and you will end up needed braces again. Just wear them for six months so you can have perfect teeth for the rest of your life.

yes you do have to wear a retainer so they dont move back. I don't really know how long you have to wear it but maybe a couple of years. Its not a big deal though.
