Pain in jaw from tooth with abcess?!

Question: I've already been to a dentist and they've got me on clindamycin and tylenol 3 with codeine. I have an appointment with an oral surgeon on monday.

I've been following the directions that I was given with the meds I'm on to get rid of the infection, but even after taking the tylenol 3, my tooth STILL hurts really bad. Its making it difficult to sleep or do anything.

is there anything else I can do to make the pain from this abcess go down? I don't want to take more than what is recommended of my pain killers but something has got to give!

thanks

You can take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen (motrin) along with the tylenol 3 you have been taking. You can take a maximum 800mg motrin three times a day (always with food) in addition to your tylenol 3 which should help with the pain. 800mg is a big dose, so it can only be taken short term - you shouldn't take 800mg for more than a week, but in the short term it shouldn't cause any problems.

Alternatively you could try good old clove oil to numb the pain, but it tastes disgusting!!

Ouch! I know it's an agonizing pain.

Unfortunately the only thing that is going to help is time. An abscess is an infection much like a blister except it's encased in bone. With a blister on your heel, the skin expands as the infection increases. In your jaw the bone won't give. What causes the pain is the pressure inside the jaw itself.

The antibiotics will reduce the infection which will reduce the pain. But it can take a day or two for the meds to reduce the pressure inside the bone.

In the meantime, you can call your dentist and ask for a stronger pain medication.

Good luck!

Bizarre, I have one too! And no it's no picnic. It even gives headache. The only thing is the antibiotic that will get rid of the abscess and the pain will recede. It take 4 to 5 days. You should be good quite soon. Although, your Tylenol 3 are quite strong, you surely use some more than prescribed. I'm taking anti-inflammatory for my spine, plus Tylenol 4, and that's up to me how many to take a day. He gives me 8/day, but I rarely use that many. And for me it's constantly. Therefore, I wouldn't be too scared since it's for a short period of time.
Wishing good recovery.

you could try gargling with mouth wash that may help,,,,i know how pain full tooth ake can be good luck
