Frenectomy anyone?!

Question:

Frenectomy anyone?

My 4 year old son has an anterior frenum and has been told to have a frenectomy done soon or before the adult teeth come in. Has anyone had this done? What was it like? How old were you? I was told by a second opinion to leave it because sometimes when the adult teeth come in it will correct itself. I was told 4 was way too young.

Answers:

You can have a frenectomy at any age. If you choose not to have it done now it can always be done later if it doesn't self correct. Usually it depends on the severity of the frenum attachment. Pull up his upper lip- is the band of tissue that goes between his front teeth very thick ?-like a rubberband? If this is the case then it may not self correct. If the frenum is thick just down until it goes in between the teeth and his permanent teeth are large enough when they come in to push the space closed then it may self correct. Usually there are a few stitches, a little soreness and a puffy lip for a few days.
