There are a wide variety of dental x-ray machines out there with varying power and features. Some lets you adjust the power output, some are fixed but lets you adjust exposure time.
The units in my practice have an X-ray tube with a fixed output of 65 kVp at 7 milliamps. I use these for digital X-rays, and they can be used with either phosphor imaging plates (which need to be scanned) or x-ray sensors (instantaneous image capture) or conventional film (needs a longer exposure time with a fixed output X-ray unit).
The amount of radiation you would receive from a conventional film periapical X-ray would be about the same as taking two flights on a jet airliner. (airliners fly at high altitudes where the air is very thin, where you would receive more cosmic radiation coming in from space than you would in the thick air near the ground).
