OK..once the bleeding has stopped the gauze can be left out..."Do Not" Smoke, Suck on a straw or drink from a pop bottle or can...none of those for at least four day's. Starting right now though place "cold" packs on your cheeks over the extraction site, "do not" use a hot pack. You said the extractions was this morning, in that case you can eat ice cream and drink a "cold" beverage. You should also start rinsing your mouth with a mixture of say half glass of cool water with one teaspoon of salt in it, rinse gently as you do not want to lose a blood clot. You stay with "cold" soft foods for a couple of day's to be on the safe side. By the third day your ready for soups, jello and if your careful meatloaf. By the fourth day you should be doing really good. Still rinsing with the salt water three times a day, but your diet should include cooked veggies, hamburger steak and soft salads. Still, no smoking, sucking on straws or drinking from pop bottles or cans...By the fifth day you are ready for just about anything you feel big enough to eat....NOW, your total healing time will be between 5 and 6 months..during that time the extraction sites will seal, heal and change size and shape...You can help the healing process by taking a really good daily multi-vitamin that has A<E<C<D<B<C and Zinc in it. Good luck and I wish you well.

Until you stop bleeding. The gauze it mostly to absorb the blood coming from the stitched gum area and keep it from dripping down into your throat. Also be very sure to clean the area with water every few hours. It helps remove food debri from the gum line and keep your breath a little fresher.

I think you shouldn't stress much to open your mouth wide. As your doctor will tell you not to chewing in those area. And it depends on how your body is good in blood clotting but hold on gauze for a while the blood would stop. You can even be changing the gauze like every two hours and in the next 24hrs your the gum suppose to be clot and by just little traces of blood you will see. By the time is 2days you won't see any blood again. Don't forget to be rinsing your mouth time to time with warm water added with salt. As I believe your Doctor might have told you. Be blessed.
