Answers:

Hi JS, well, first of all, that´s a very very bad news for you, but i am answering to your question about what causes abcesses.

An abcess, in non medical terms and easy for you to understand it, is identically as a pimple, but harder, bigger, and much more painfull, and i will explain to you how does it works since the beggining by easy steps.

1. You didnt took the best care for your teeth so they got "dirty", or you have been suffering with caries all your life, or you have a periodontal (the teeth´s surrounding and supporting tissues) deseasesuch as piorreah or severe gingivitis (this is caused by tar and plaque that hasnt been removed from your teeth, so it makes your gums to be swollen and your bone to be reabsorbed).

2. Any of the above, will get worse while the time pass, if you didnt took the right care for it.

3. Any of the above, will become an infection, and will come the pus, the pus doesn´t have any space to drain, so the soft tissues get swollen and the pus is trapped like in a bubble, that´s why it hurts that much, because the pus is occupying space that doesn´t belongs to it, and under pressure, your body´s deffensive system failed, so it´s last option is the PAIN!! and as long as you take to fix the problem, (any of it), it will become worse and worse.

4. The dentist that you saw, couldn´t find any better treatment than pull it out, so he will have to do it and you will have to manage with the consecuences later.... is your choice to replace that missing tooth with a bridge or an implant or whatever is the best choice for you. ask your dentist about it.

5. please take toothbrushing seriously well learned for your future healthcare.

I hope that this answer solved your question.

Sorry about grammar, but i am a dentist from mexico city, so you can understand.

Hope you get well.
