Popping and painful jaw?!

Question: Lately my jaw has been soooo painful. I find it hard eating. It seems my mouth will not fully open and there is a lot of pain on the left side. I remember when I was younger I had this problem. But it seemed to disappear until now. Does anyone know what is wrong? Is there any treatment? Thank you!

Hello, what you describe is a class case of upper jaw socket lining having come loose. The socket the head of the lower jaw rotates in is covered with a very very thin slick layer of tissue. Sometimes that layer comes loose and begins to, lets call it "wad up"..sort of the way a sock will work it's way down in your shoe. The liner wads up and two issues happen, your jaw joint gets very tender and opening is painful as well as restricted. You may even have bone to bone contact at this point....Now having said that, let me also say that may not be the issue at all. You could be dealing with the onset of Arthritis in your jaw joint, or it may be your bite relationship has now become off and your jaws are over closing. Over closing happens when back teeth are extracted and not replaced with a partial denture or existing dentures have worn down to the point that jaws are over closing in order to make the teeth contact when you eat. If when you close your teeth together your chin is farther forward than the tip of your nose, you probably over closing, if you have really deep creases from the sides of your nose down to the corners of your mouth, your over closing. See your dental professional to determine exactly what is happening...Good luck and I wish you well.

It could be related to TMJ, and should be checked by a dentist as soon as possible.

Sounds like TMJ. I left the link below. You can ask your dentist about it. Good luck!
