Tooth Extraction- Sedative Question?!
Question: When you're put you to sleep during a wisdom tooth extraction, how do they administer the sedative? I am very squeemish about having an IV in my hand/arm. Is there another way they do it, or is this most common?

Mine was an IV. . . supposed to go in the elbow, except they couldn't hit anything (no one ever can!) and eventually settled for my hand.
They started giving me some N2O about halfway through this little ordeal of not being able to hit any blood vessels properly, but I don't think that stayed on very long.
Oh, and I HATE needles. But it hits VERY fast, and I hardly even noticed it even with all the fun.
Having read the earlier responses. . . I'd guess it varies depending on how complicated the surgery is and what the doctors like to use. My mouth was a mess to work with, but you might be able to get by with less if it's an easy surgery?

Gas is another way, it goes over your nose and mouth, like breathing oxygen.
I am not 100% certain but I'm pretty sure that gas is the most common sedative in those types of processes. They'll usually make sure you're numb beforehand.
I had major surgery on my foot and it was gas that put me under for that one.
i only had gas and then they put a couple shots in my gum. Just like a filling.
That is most common, but they can give you something to calm you before they do it if need be!
IV's only hurt for a minute, i've had plenty, but you could always ask for laughing gas if they bother you.
IV is typical but they do offer pills too. So you do have possible options talk to the oral surgeon before your surgery and ask them.
i had an iv. i doubt that they would give you subq or im injections. it's much safer just to get an iv. if you can deal with having your wisdom teeth ripped from your head, you can deal with having an iv put in. just don't watch.
When i went, they gave me gas, and a few moments later stuck something in my hand. it didnt bother me much but i was out within moments.
Usually, N20 or nitrous oxide is administered intranasally, or in the nose. You may be sedated via IV, but it is most commonly administered in gas form.
having the nedal in your arm really isnt that bad i have had to have sugary on my mouth and teeth pulled like crazy and the first time i have to do it i was terrified but when they put the needel in my arm it was a tiny pinch and that was it and in 20 sce. your asleep
First of all they will not put you to sleep, I've never heard that :S
They'll just poke ur "gum" with the amnestesia,and that it.. you'll feel numb and they will extract it...
if ur tooth is not out yet, they'll have to go with a "small" surgical procedure.. they cut open a bit of your gum, and then they work their way down to get the tooth...
there's nothing to worry about ..
just a little pain after the extraction, but "advil or tylenol" will work..
i removed 3 of my wisdom teeth.. :)

They often do stick a needle in you first at hospital. At dentists they just used to whack on the gas without such preliminaries when it was done to me. Say that you would prefer the gas first. Some people are more scared of the rubber mask and the gas than the needle you see.
