How can i make my dentist give me a refund?!

Question:

How can i make my dentist give me a refund?

i had 2 crowns (upper front) placed by a dentist a few months ago. they are too bulky and constantly hitting my lower teeth causing severe pain and migraines. my dentist REFUSES to fix anything or give me a refund. i went to another dentist to fix the prob (paid $600) and he stated i need new crowns. I have contacted the dental society for my county which contacted my previous dentist and she states she will NOT refund me any money. i don't feel confident that there's much i can do to get my dentist to give me a refund so i can get new crowns.

what type of action can i take to get my money back?

Answers:

That's a tough one. Generally, if the dentist who placed the crowns did not do a satisfactory job, he/she is ethically bound to retreat the teeth. You need to do a little research. When the doctor seated the crowns (cemented them into your mouth), did he do a try-in? Did the dentist use articulating paper (usually blue or red paper that you bite onto and rub side to side) to check your bite? Did you have root canals prior to placement of the crowns or was it a cosmetic procedure? Did you pay out-of-pocket or was it processed through your insurance company? Did the doctor use in in-house lab to create the crowns, or send them out to a third party? You can file a complaint with the State Board against the dentist as the dental society should have recommended. You wouldn't want someone else to go through the same problem as you, and it helps to add strength to your claim. A lot of dentists would refuse to correct your problem as the original doctor should handle the case; but you do have options. You did not state the county in which you live. Please know that not all dentists are as irresponsible as the doctor with whom you are having this issue. I am a Dental Assistant and I have worked with both good and BAD dentists. Get all your information together and don't give up. Also, take a photo of your profile. (It doesn't seem as though that dentist would have any 'after' pictures.) You also have a legal right to your dental chart, be sure to ask for a copy. Check with other dentists in the area about this particular dentist's practice. You may be able to find one that has had to remedy a situation similar to yours. And if you go about things the correct way, another doctor may help you for a lesser fee. But there are standard and customary fees for treatments. If the dentist used a lab tech outside of the office, you can go directly to that lab and let them see the final product. Any lab technician worth his salt would not let you walk around with "horse teeth". If you have to go as far as small claims court, make sure your MD has records of any migraines or related issues you have had in the interim. Good luck!
