Jaw Clicks and Is Painful?!

Question: Last August I got hit in the mouth with a 2x6 when I stepped on it and it came flying up. I had knocked a few teeth lose and had a nasty 2 inch gash that went through and through the skin. It just missed my nose.

The board hit me at angle going from left to right.
I have noticed that the left side of my jaw clicks since then and has started to get louder. Over the last few days this has become very painful, I am having a hard time just eating.
I have an appointment with the dentist in 2 weeks.

Was wondering what this could be and do I need to get in to see the dentist sooner.

Your injury may have caused you to get TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder). This is acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. It can be very painful with pain at the back of the jaw near your ear and in your jaw. The clicking and popping is a very common symptom of this disorder. You may also find that as it progresses, you will have problems opening or closing your mouth. If you could get into the dentist sooner, it might be a good idea as the pain is only going to get worse.

it's called tmj.
i have this same problem.
i guess the jaw is moving slightly out of the socket when you chew.
i don't know if there's anything they can do to help.
i was told not to chew gum.
i would call the dentist and ask the receptionist.
good luck.
